(Summer) uniform

Today I was online, wasting time during a workshop… I know I know, but in my defense, the workshop was on the use of technology in our classrooms. In any case, I started thinking about my summer wardrobe and about all the different pieces I need to get if and when summer finally gets here. My list:

  • Swedish Hasbeens Slip In (in black);
  • Slightly oversized crew neck t-shirts (in white);
  • Lightweight stripped sweater;
  • Stripped t-shirts;
  • Nike Huaraches;
  • The perfect pair of distressed denim shorts that I’ll be wearing with those aforementioned Balenciaga sandals (inspiration: Tash Sefton and Elle Ferguson).

Nothing highly exciting, no real color, only updated versions of items I already own… That’s when a Garance Doré post from 2 weeks ago – Uniform – came to mind. At the end of her post, she asked “Do you wear a uniform?” I really want to answer no, because saying that I not only wear a uniform but also enjoy wearing it sounds so boring… Yet, you and I both know that it’s the sad truth.

For many years, my mum has tried to get me to remove my black cloak, with no avail. Maybe I’m just a really lazy person – black is easy and works with everything. Maybe it’s the Virgo in me – you really can’t go wrong with black. It could also be that wearing a uniform during my formative years has conditioned me to appreciate its distinctive nature. Or maybe it’s just that, as The New Oxford American Dictionary puts it, it is the particular way in which I exist in the world of fashion.

It is the forming part of my sartorial personality.

COS, at last…

Exciting news: COS, H&M’s minimalist, low-key sister, is finally coming to Canada. Even more exciting? It seems that Montreal will have its own store as of Fall 2015, at the same time as Toronto!!

I love COS – albeit from afar, but I love the brand all the same. Their clothes are simple and to the point: clean lines, clean color palette, no fuss. Exactly what I look for in clothing. Click on the link below and check out their Graduated shirt dress or their Long silk jacket, you’ll be convinced.

P.S. And J Crew, MUJI and UNIQLO: anytime now, we’re ready.

Power shopping…

Yesterday, I had a very productive shopping day: everything I had been eyeing lately was purchased. A pair of slingback kitten heels? Bought. That great black and white pencil skirt from Banana Republic? Bought. Speaking of Banana Republic, amen for Marissa Webb – I really like what she’s been doing with the brand. Check out the Huarache Oxfords shown below: per-fec-tion. I will definitely be adding them to my summer wish list on Pinterest. And lastly, a new blazer to tie everything together. By the way, Zara sells great blazers – bon, beau, pas cher as we say in French.

All this to say that I built the perfect power woman outfit and yet, I didn’t spend a penny. Is there anything better than shopping with someone else’s money? There really isn’t – so thank you  M. for buying all these items that I loved, but really had no use for in my line of work.

Coachella…

Now that I fancy myself a fashion blogger, I realize that there are some events, fashion shows and openings that I really should be attending. Case in point: Coachella, last weekend. I know that it’s still going on this weekend, but I already have other plans…

That being said, since that festival is as much about the fashion as it is about the music, I figured I could still plan out what I’d be wearing if I were to attend it:

For Friday, I’m thinking Hunter boots à la Kate Moss circa Glastonbury 2005. Who cares if there’s a drought in California and therefore, a very slim chance of there being any mud? Fashion is never about practicality…

But after losing 10 pounds due to excessive sweating, I’ll probably go for comfort on Saturday, like Kate Bosworth on this picture.

As for Sunday, as you all know, I’m not one for color but when it’s presented in such a fabulous way, even I can’t resist!

And the hair! Now, that’s hippie chic done right.

Anyhow, here’s what I’ll most likely be wearing tomorrow, because unlike over in California, they’re calling for rain here in Montreal… joyful joyful.

Ne’er cast a clout till May be out…

Here in Montreal, the temperature has finally gone above 5 degrees Celsius. Which basically means that it’s summer, right? You don’t believe me? Ask that guy wearing shorts next to you on the subway or the new secretary at your office. Yes, the one wearing sandals – it’s finally summer.

As for me, what am I wearing? I”ve put away my Canada Goose and I’ve removed my socks, that’s it. I’m Haitian, I know heat –  it’s going to take more than 10 degrees Celcius to faze me…  I guess you’ll have to wait until June to see me parade in my new Balenciaga sandals.

But they’re worth the wait, trust me.
