About sergelyne

I was going up the stairs at work one day and I realized that, sadly, I still do not live in New York and that, even sadder: I don't own a Celine purse. Nope - not anytime soon, not on a teacher salary. So I thought why not poke fun at my champagne taste... and hence this new blog called Today, I wore black.

Wish | Stuart Weitzman Lowland boots

Earlier this month, I was raving about the Margaux flats. But the temperatures have since dropped and we have now officially entered boot season – which brings me to the newest item on my wish list: the Lowland boot by Stuart Weitzman.

Lowland - Stuart Weitzman

Lowland – Stuart Weitzman

I own the 5050 boot in black Napa and really thought that they were perfection – great with dresses, skirts, skinny jeans and leggings – until I saw the Lowland. It could have to do with its almond toe-shape or its back tie. It could also simply have to do with the fact that I don’t own a pair. Yet. In any case, I’m getting more and more obsessed with the Lowland and I’m (not-so) secretly trying to find a way to destroy/lose/give away my 5050 so I can have a reason to purchase them…

As for you, I strongly suggested that you take a look at Stuart Weitzman’s Fall Boot Guide: it’ll definitely make you appreciate – if not look forward to October and November.

Oh, by the way, deep down inside I really want these boots:

But nothing about them say “Hi! I’m your kid’s French teacher.” Nothing.

Happy shopping everyone!

Marissa Webb and Banana Republic are parting ways

It looks like the Banana Republic’s Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear collection was Marissa Webb’s swan song, as it was announced today that she will no longer be their creative director. It’s quite a sad new because she had managed to push Banana Republic – a store that was synonymous with entry-level suits – in a fresher, more contemporary direction, all the while retaining its understated, clean look.

Rumors has it that Gap Inc has chosen to replace Webb, not by a single person but rather by design team – just as they did Gap. My only hope is that going that route will have better consequences on the esthetics of Banana Republic’s future collections than it has had on Gap’s latest collections…

Regardless, at least I have these pieces to look forward to:

Want | Margaux flats

With Fall slowly settling in and with temperatures quickly falling below 15 degrees Celsius,  I can’t deny it any longer:  it’s time to retire my beloved Birkenstock and Balenciaga sandals… Thankfully, yesterday I came across this picture on the Shoes of NYC Instagram account which reminded me that there is life after sandal season… in the form of ballet flats.

That same picture introduced me to a world I didn’t know existed for a commoner: custom-made shoes. I own J.Crew ballet flats – love!  I own a pair Repetto ballet flats – perfection! But I’m now ready for a made-to-measure pair of shoes.

Happy shopping everyone!

Le syndrome de la page blanche

Le syndrome de la page blanche.

In French, that’s what we call the inability to produce new work. Yep, I have writer’s block. After starting this blog 6 months ago, I feel like I have nothing more to say. Can you picture it? A teacher who feels like she has nothing more to say. At the very beginning of the school year. How ironic. Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve been off work for so long or the fact that I spent the summer wearing every color there is except for black… I don’t have a clear reason, but what I do know for sure is that I’m going through a bit of slump. I thought that writing a blog would be easy: I mean how difficult can talking about my love of the color black, my obsession with shoes and my taste for champagne really be? And all that in a language that’s not mine? Really, how difficult can it be?

Very, that’s how difficult it is. Sometimes inspiration doesn’t come. Sometimes it does, but in so few words that they are not worth holding on to… Sometimes a picture suffice so why bother trying to explain anything… I found myself writing less and less. A post every 2 weeks. Then every 3 weeks. At that point,  I started to panic: surely I couldn’t have said all I had to say on the matter. 40 posts? That’s it? That’s all I have to contribute to the blogosphere?

Maybe. Or maybe it’s just had nothing to say for the past couple weeks.

Anyhow, going through this slump, along with seeing pictures of the different Spring/Summer 2016 collections, made me think of the real creative minds of the world, the ones whose livelihood actually depends on whether or not they are able to transform their artistry into something tangible and it made me all the more in awe of their capacity to constantly reinvent themselves and ultimately, the world.

On the bright side, I’ve started to wear black again.

Jacket – Zara
Sweater – Club Monaco
Pants – Banana Republic
Espadrilles – Stuart Weitzman

Headband - American Apparel Coat - Zara Sweater - Banana Republic Jeans - J.Crew Sandals - Birkenstock

And COS will shortly open its Montreal location. So inspiration, here I come.

Wish | Zac Posen Spring/Summer 2016

Ok so I could pretend that I am at New York Fashion Week, but you and I know that I am not. I could also tell you that I’ve at least studied all the pictures that came out so far, but again, I’d be lying – I’m back at work now (urgh, finally) and have less time for Instagram. The pictures that I did see though were the ones from Zac Posen’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection. Love! The collection in its entirety would be perfect for that vacation to the Amalfi Coast that I will not be taking with Olivia Palermo. Translation: I want and need every item presented in that collection – from the midi dresses to the coats to the Christian Louboutin flats that he paired with the outfits, all the way to that black gown shown in the last picture below. I want it all!

P.S. Where was that black gown when I was looking for a wedding dress? I promised my mum I wouldn’t wear black on my wedding day, but I would have made an exception for Zac…
