Boucle et Papier, a new favorite…

Ask anyone who knows me well and they’ll tell you that I’m constantly going over past decisions: why did I get the Speedy 30 instead of the Speedy 35 ? The latter being so much more practical for an everyday use. And 2 years ago when I was on a quest to find the perfect shoes for my wedding, maybe I should have gone with Manolo’s Hangisi pumps instead of settling for his Chaos sandals – as cliché as it sounds, they would have made for the perfect something blue… I’m always second-guessing my choices and while that might be aggravating for Habibi and my go-to shopping partner Fabiola, in my eyes it’s part of the shopping experience: choices have to be made and then I’m left mourning for the items I had to leave behind.

But sometimes I mourn for things that were never actually within my grasp, for things I wasn’t even on the market for… like a stationery store.

So here’s something else you need to know about me: I looooove stationery. It took me longer to choose my wedding invitations than it did to choose my wedding dress. I’m as excited to buy a new diary as I am to buy a new black crewneck sweater. And although my handwriting is terrible, I make it a point to handwrite my thank-you notes. If I had to open my own store one day, it’d be a stationery store; that’s why my heart sank when I read the article a friend of mine sent me about one that has recently opened in Montreal called Boucle & Papier. Clairefontaine, Garance DoréMoleskine, Rhodia, Rifle Paper Co.. Perfection. It’s my store. Except that it’s not. All I can do is go there to stock up on miscellaneous stationery items, pens and pencils, quirky notebooks and… a new diary.

Wish | Rochas Embellished Metallic Slingbacks

How many shoes are too many shoes and would you commit to a pair a year (fine, season) with no problem? Which would they be?

Leandra Medine concludes her post How Many Shoes Are Too Many Shoes?  with the questions above and unlike her, I thought that it was ridiculous, if not inhumane to be asked to commit to wearing one pair of shoes a year or a season… especially since I can’t even commit to a pair a weekend.

But it got me thinking. And I guess that if I absolutely had to narrow my shoe collection down to only one pair, I’d go with these embellished flats from Rochas’ Spring 2014 Ready-to-wear collection.

They’d be perfect with the pair of straight ankle-length jeans that I’m planning on getting for Fall, all the while being equally perfect with a midi skirt or mini skirt. Also, parent-teacher night? Check. Date night? Check. Wedding? Check. Giovanna Battaglia approved? Check.

Now, I’m fully aware that I’m $775 short and a year late for these flats, but since I never really intended on getting rid of my shoes, it makes no difference to me… That being said, if any of you is on the market for a pair of embellished slingback flats, look at what I found inside of Glamour’s September issue.

AND, they also come in black! Bam!

P.S. If I were another woman – well basically if I were a woman who lunches as oppose to a woman who teaches, I would have settled on this pair from the Rochas’ s Fall 2014 Ready-to-wear collection…

Oh wait, where was this dress 2 years ago? Although I guess I would have had to have gotten a visit from height fairy 33 years ago in order to wear it…

Ok fine, our wedding was one of many held that Saturday in Montreal and apart from our friends and family, no one knew or really cared about it. Still, it was to this day my finest sartorial moment…

Oh, and marrying Habibi was pretty epic too!

The tale of a reformed overpacker

It happened on the second day of my honeymoon: I was was getting ready for a day trip to Hilo when I realized that three-quarter of the items I had packed were not Hawaii-appropriate. Actually, they were all appropriate: for instance my beloved Manolos, but only if I had had plans to go for cocktails or fancy dinners every evening. But since our plans consisted of things like checking out the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and swimming with turtles and manta rays – ok, these two were solely my husband’s plans – I didn’t need high heels or cocktails dresses. And since it was scorching hot outside, all I really needed were a couple t-shirts, a pair or 2 of shorts, 2-3 bathing suits and some flip-flops. As Habibi had hinted, him and I could have shared a suitcase and avoided the added baggage fee. But I didn’t listen and packed everything that I owned that was summery, cute and in another shade than black.

You think that I would have learnt my lesson after having to pay $50 in service charges for excess baggage. I didn’t. Over the holidays, I had so many things in my suitcases that, on our way back home from Los Angeles, I had to ask my brother to put some of my purchases in his suitcase.

Anyhow, I’m really trying to become a reformed overpacker and that’s why when I went up North a couple weekends ago my bag looked like this:

Good, no? Granted, I was going to the country and only sleeping there 1 night…

Therefore, the true test will be my upcoming trip to New York City, because it’s one thing to scale things down when going to the country, it’s a whole other when going to the big Apple. Here’s my game plan: I’ve been meaning to give the popular 5-piece French wardrobe concept a try for a while now – it sounds like torture, but so does chemically straightening one’s hair and yet I do it every month. Anyhow, this time packing will be all about true quality pieces and not quantity. Plus, I also really want to avoid doing that thing I always do: buying new clothes before going on a trip even though shopping is always on the itinerary when I’m traveling abroad. And finally, since I highly doubt that I’ll be the one to impress New Yorkers, why should I even try?

Here’s to being a light packer! I’ll definitely keep you posted on my success. Or failure.

P.S. Looks like Garance Doré and I have yet another thing in common.
